The Rev. Joseph Lane
After working in HIV-AIDS starting in the late-1980s, I served congregations of various sizes and styles in the Diocese of California, which comprises much of the SF Bay Area. Among the early out gays to be ordained in DioCal (deacon ’95 / priest ’96), I participated in diocesan and wider Episcopal Church affairs, focusing particularly on hospitality and inclusion, access to ordination for all the baptized, and marriage equality. My first degree was in music, from the University of Arkansas; my MDiv is from the Church Divinity School of the Pacific in Berkeley; and I hold a DMin from Seabury, then located in Evanston, IL. My Jewish attorney spouse Jay Framson and I have been partnered since 2000, and we were married standing near the bust of Harvey Milk at SF City Hall on election day 2008. I took disability retirement in 2011 due to a neurological vocal disorder called spasmodic dysphonia. We moved to Altadena in October 2013, and I started at St. Mark’s on our first Sunday in town. My original intention was to duck in and out of the 7:45 and otherwise lay low. That lasted about two weeks. We love traveling, collecting arte popular, and our Woodbury Road household includes two cats and two German shepherds. Thanks to laryngeal Botox injections, I can say ‘yes’ to Carri and help out more at St. Mark’s, the healthiest
parish I’ve ever known. I’m thrilled to be here and involved!
